Hearing the Future
Either you are repeating yourself or I’m hearing the future.
It’s the question that every creator faces: Am I stuck in a rut, or am I refining my voice?
Sometimes, that creative feeling of déjà vu is actually your next big idea trying to get through. So how do you tell the difference?
Here are a few quick ways to find out:
Change Your Canvas. If you’re a writer, try doodling the idea. If you’re an artist, try writing about it. Shifting your medium can expose a new angle you couldn’t see before, moving the idea from a repeat to a revelation.
Introduce a Wildcard. Pick a random word or object and force yourself to incorporate it into your work. This playful act of experimentation can break the cycle and push you toward the future.
Reflect on the Pattern. Look back at your past work. What’s the recurring theme, color, or feeling? This isn’t a flaw—it’s your unique fingerprint. The trick is to lean into that pattern with intention. Your future is built on the foundations of your past.
