Finding the Music in the Mundane
Ever felt like your creative space is trying to tell you something? Sometimes, the most unexpected sounds become our greatest muses. Here in Baton Rouge, even the hum of the cicadas can spark an idea.
Today, I’m challenging myself (and you!) to tune into the hidden orchestra around us. Pick one object in your home—that creaky old floorboard, the gentle whir of the fridge, the clinking of your coffee cup.
What sound does it make?
Imitate the sound by humming it.
What does that sound feel like?
Now, let that everyday sound inspire a tiny piece of art. Maybe make a silly song to the tune. It doesn’t have to be grand! Maybe make a quick sketch of the sound’s shape, a few words describing its rhythm, or even a mini-sculpture made from scraps, trying to visually represent its unique vibration.
It’s about unveiling the art in the ordinary and allowing the mundane to become a gateway to insightful creation. Every object has a story, and sometimes, it’s a song.
