Writing the World You Hear
As the days here in Baton Rouge start to hint at cooler air, there’s a different rhythm in the air. This shift often makes me feel like I’m listening to a new soundtrack.
Today’s creative prompt: Become a sound detective for your writing.
Choose Your Soundtrack: Pick an ambient sound. Maybe it’s the gentle drone of a distant lawnmower, the patter of rain, the bustling sounds of campus life, or even a pre-recorded soundscape that evokes a mood.
Listen & Write: Put on your headphones. Let the sounds wash over you. Now, write a scene, a journal entry, or a short piece of flash fiction that feels like that sound. Are your sentences short and staccato like raindrops, or long and flowing like distant traffic? Does the mood of the sound create tension or calm?
No Plot Needed: Don’t worry about plot or characters. Just let the sound dictate the rhythm, the emotional tone, and the pacing of your words. It’s a beautifully imperfect way to spark creativity and explore narrative in its rawest form.
You’ll be amazed at how a simple sound can unveil a whole new story within you. What sound are you writing to today?
